1983 saw the release of Billy Joel's homage to the music of his teenage years, his ninth album An Innocent Man. He started working on the album after his divorce from his first wife Elizabeth Weber, when he found himself single for the first time since achieving rock star status. He said at the time that An Innocent Man was reflective of how he felt about being able to date supermodels like Christie Brinkley feeling like he was a teenager all over again.
An Innocent Man was nominated for Album of The Year at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards but lost to Michael Jackson's Thriller.
An Innocent Man
The title track An Innocent Man was a homage to Ben E. King and The Drifters. Billy joel said in a 1997 interview about the song: "I had a suspicion that was going to be the last time I was going to be able to hit those notes, so why not go out in a blaze of glory? That was the end of Billy's high note."
The Longest Time
The Longest Time was a homage to doo-wop and required 14 different background vocal tracks - all of which were done by Billy Joel and mixed in production. The only non vocal instruments in The Longest Time were finger clicks and a hi-hat. The Longest Time was also parodied in Family Guy as how cavemen discovered singing.
Tell Her About It
Tell Her About It was a homage to Motown girl groups like The Supremes and Martha Reeves and The Vandellas. The music video is filmed on a fictional 'Ed Sullivan Show'.
Uptown Girl
Uptown Girl was a homage to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The 'Uptown Girl' in the music video was his future wife Christie Brinkley. They married in 1985 and divorced in 1994.
