"Escape", later known as "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)", is the title of a song written and recorded by American artist Rupert Holmes. It was released in September 1979 as the lead single from his album Partners in Crime. The song was the last US number one song of the 1970s and the second number one song of the 1980s ("Please Don't Go" by KC of KC and the Sunshine Band was the actual first number one song of the 1980s with "Escape" dropping to number two then again topping the chart the second week of January 1980). Hence, it is the only song on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart to rise to the number-one position in two different decades. To this day, Holmes regards the song with a mixture of pride and chagrin; while it has made him wealthy and famous, as one of his friends apparently described it as "the success that ruined his career", drawing too much attention from his more serious musical works. |
