WARNING: Danny P. Hoyland (Doctor Dan) is certainly different but……..
His Saturday Morning routine is a joy to behold. As he commences on air at 5.30am, he arrives at River949 well in advance of his show and immediately gets out the cleaning fluids and completely cleans the kitchen ( this includes rounding up the stray coffee and teacups left around the building) and proceeds to stack-up the dishwasher . Then armed with the Glen 20, he gives Studio 1 the once over. We think he works on the adage ‘a clean studio is a happy studio’.

Completely organised with his paperwork and interviews totally arranged to the minute, he sits down  to present his ‘Great Weekender” and that’s when  everything goes out the window. Sitting here observing his performance, his antics and the stream of high profile people exiting  the studio always scratching their head, the first comment is ‘What’s he on?’  Relax folks, Danny doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, he’s passionate about what he does and in terms of his radio show each Saturday, it is like no other. It’s a mix of light hearted though meaningful banter with compelling interviews relating to the lifestyles of our listeners across South East Queensland.

The music holds it together and gives Danny the chance to mix up his favourite fresh juices ( not red cordial, as suspected)in collaboration with Graham Snow (Snowy) our newsman. Some people can’t believe what they’re hearing but let me tell you, it is real and it is live and anything can happen; and it certainly does…..

Great Weekender Reviews

‘Ma-Ma Creek is a peaceful little township. I have never heard of Danny Hoyland

but the tourists who flock here every weekend tell me ‘he says he’s number one in our town’. Ummmm…..all I can say, whilst we all listen to River949 here in Ma-Ma Creek, how can this fellow claim to be Number one . Out of the 403 residents who live in Ma-Ma Creek ( and I know each and every one personally) there is no one here of that name.

Mr. Hoyland, we do appreciate the publicity though.  You are turning Ma-Ma Creek into a tourist mecca.

Anon.

As I am constantly covering stories across South East Queensland, I can’t believe the many comments I receive  about Danny P Hoyland. Mostly, people want to know ‘What he’s on?’.

When I tell them he doesn’t drink or smoke and he’s always like that, they can’t believe it.  I just tell everyone he’s on the red cordial……Makes life simpler     Peter Collins  Channel 9.

I listened, thinking I had one too many on the Friday night. Took all of the berocca  and realised that this guy Danny Hoyland needed them more than me. I did enjoy the guests on the show though. Steve, Yamanto

Small but very interesting display. Opens to low key elements and once through the door, it’s party time. Screaming, yelling, duck and rooster noises and plenty of doggies. No…this is not about a unit for Sale at Coolangatta. It refers to The Great Weekender and Danny Hoyland.

Name withheld to protect the writer

I have decided to go back to study comprehension. Sure as eggs, I can’t fathom Danny Hoyland’s Saturday performance. I called him out of interest to ask him ‘why I can’t grasp the show or its elements.. Danny (or at least I think it was him) said he cannot understand it either but don’t worry.

Maybe I should see a shrink instead.

Neale Stuart, notable Broadcaster and outback historian met Danny Hoyland in Pimpinbudgee – an isolated spot on the way to Toowoomba in Queensland. Neale, a considerate soul offered  the stranger a hand up in the local CWA Hall. Little did Neale know at the time, Danny Hoyland was standing up and so that was the start of a lifelong bond between the two. Neale is constantly on the move covering personalities and happenings in places like Ubobo and Wonglepong and the St. George Winery; then there’s the Watermelon and Moon Festivals. One thing assured, Neale brings all the gossip from the Outback every Saturday morning on the Great Weeke
