Danny Hoyland is a proud born and bred Queenslander, that’s why he is the little Queenslander banana bender from the Great Weekender, a lifestyle programme with a difference, broadcast live every Saturday 6:00am to 9:00am. The Great Weekender has great music, interesting interviews with quirky, different personal stories, and he likes to inform, and have a laugh. People from the corporate world, government, sports, and everyday folk that have their own story that makes you think.
A radio veteran of 30 years, working as a Promotions Manager, to a Talkback radio producer, and a roving “on the road” reporter. Danny was the first aid presenter of the award winning National Children’s TV Show Wombat, and for a year was an adventurous reporter on Creek to Coast.
Danny is a Life Member of his beloved Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club, a former Club President, Club Captain, and currently is the Club Deputy President. “When it’s hot in Brisbane it’s COOL n gatta.”
He is also a Life Member of Surf Life Saving Queensland, and a former SLSQ Board member. He was an original honorary rescue crew member of the Surf Life Saving Queensland’s WESTPAC Helicopter Rescue Service, and served as the Honorary SLSQ Helicopter Crew Chief of Training and Operations for 24 years. Danny is a Life Member of the Gold Coast Helicopter Rescue Service Gold Coast.
Danny is now dedicated to volunteering his time as a safety auditor for the professional arm of Surf Life Saving- the Australian SLSQ Lifeguard Service, and also attends the Youth Development Camps as a key note speaker, and has done so for the past 20 years.
He loves the beach and Coolangatta, but his other love is Rugby Union Football. He played as a cheeky little halfback for the South’s Magpies Rugby Union Football Club, and has served on the SDRUFC Board, and is a Life Member of the South’s Club.
Danny’s other interest is the Australian Air Force Cadets. He has been a Commanding Officer of a Squadron for 20 years, and has been a dedicated member of the AAFC for 4 decades. Currently he is the Deputy Director of Public Affairs and Communications, Australian Air Forces National Headquarters, with the rank of Squadron Leader(AAFC).
Danny is honoured to be awarded the Order of Australia medal OAM for services to Surf Life Saving, helicopter rescue, rugby and the community, the Cadet Forces Service Medal for long service to the Air Force Cadets, the Australian Defence Medal, and the Order of St John for services to humanity.
He loves the beach, Coolangatta, rugby union football, South’s RUFC, keeping fit, and loves to spend time with his Family.
