A group of Ipswich residents have condemned a proposed development at Flinders View, which would see 140 new townhouses built at the site.

Azure Development lodged the application with Ipswich City Council on May 22 this year for the 10 Astral Court complex.

However, a spokesperson for Stop the Flinders View Townhouse Development, Steven Lonton said that the site is currently a nature corridor, which is home to 348 trees and hundreds of species of native animals, flora and fauna.

Mr Lonton said that not only will the proposed complex negatively affect the environment, but it has not catered for the impact on local services – including road infrastructure.

“This can already be seen,” he said, “with the nearby Ripley development, which has congestion on Ripley Road exit, which is a death trap waiting to happen.”

” A lot of us have told our families to use other exits to avoid the traffic around Ripley Road, Reed Street and Ash Street,” he said.

Mr Lonton said that what most residents are upset about is the sheer scale of the townhouse development in an area that is surrounded by ‘low density’ housing.

“I feel you can’t build something that big in the heart of a community without dramatically shifting what’s great about the suburb,” he said.

“It’s a very old, established suburb and I just don’t think smashing a massive maximum capacity development into that area fits with the suburb, fits with aesthetics and everything that makes the suburb wonderful,” he said.

According to Ipswich City Council the site falls within the Special Opportunity (SA10) Zone, which is identified as Medium Density Housing for future land use.

Under the planning scheme that typically allows for 50-75 dwellings per hectare.

Ipswich Council is currently taking public submissions until August 11.

The council is also planning to set up an Independent Review Panel to make a decision on the proposed Flinders View townhouse development due to the high level of interest in the project.
