A proposed World class boutique stadium in Ipswich is being seen as a ‘game changer’ for the city to host major NRL or Olympic Games events.
It comes as the Miles Labor Government committed $10 million in state government funding to the redevelopment of North Ipswich Reserve at the weekend.
The move also comes as Labor and Ipswich West candidate Wendy Bourne campaign ahead of the March 16 By-Election.
All three levels of government, state, federal and local, are now backing the project.
They have pitched in a combined $40 million for the proposed stadium.
Meanwhile, the plan is for North Ipswich Reserve to be renamed the North Ipswich Sport and Entertainment Precinct.
It will see the construction of a 12,000 seat rectangular stadium and upgraded broadcast facilities.
North Ipswich Reserve is currently the home ground for the Ipswich Jets.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles said that the Jets aren’t my QRL team but I’ve always admired their rugby league history and their big local following.
“Every time I’ve trekked out here to watch the Dolphins play I’ve thought how similar the two clubs are.
“And the Broncos would not be the club they are if it weren’t for Ipswich rugby league.
“I want Jets players and fans to have great facilities.
“Community sports teams are at the heart of our suburbs and cities, so it’s only right the next generation of sports stars can get the best start.
Federal Blair MP Shayne Neumann said Ipswich is Queensland’s fastest growing region and a sporting powerhouse, so we deserve world-class sporting facilities.
“I have been championing this marquee project for several years and I know it will be a real game-changer for our city.
“I’m looking forward to working with the Miles Government and Ipswich City Council to get the ball rolling,” Mr Neumann said.
And.. Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding, Patron of the Ipswich Jets, added that the timing of the announcement would elevate North Ipswich Reserve’s prospects of being included in the Brisbane 2032 venue masterplan, which is currently undergoing a 60-day review.
“Ipswich is honoured to already be a co-host city for the Brisbane 2032 Games, having secured Brighton Homes Arena a place on the existing venue masterplan.
“I strongly believe North Ipswich Reserve, which is now funded for redevelopment and in close proximity to heavy rail and the Nicholas Street Precinct, should be seriously considered as a cost-effective option for the Brisbane 2032 masterplan.
