The latest Tropical Cyclone Alfred advice has been issued by BOM as it lies off Bribie Island and is moving slowly towards the mainland coast. It is expected to cross the mainland coast between Maroochydore and Bribie Island in the next few hours.

Details of Tropical Cyclone Alfred 22U at 4:00 am AEST [5:00 am AEDT]:

Intensity: Category 1, sustained winds near the centre of 65 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 95 kilometres per hour.

Location: within 20 kilometres of 27.0 degrees South 153.3 degrees East, estimated to be 55 kilometres north northeast of Brisbane and 55 kilometres south southeast of Maroochydore.

Movement: northwest at 10 kilometres per hour.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred, category 1, lies off Bribie Island and is moving slowly towards the mainland coast. As Alfred crosses the coast, it is expected to weaken below tropical cyclone strength.

Despite its weakening, heavy rainfall, wind and ocean impacts are likely to continue over southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales during the weekend.

Hazards:

HEAVY RAINFALL is expected to continue over southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales during the weekend. HEAVY to locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING may occur over coastal and adjacent inland areas of southeast Queensland as Alfred weakens and moves inland during today. Separate Severe Weather Warning, Flood Watches, and Flood Warnings are current for southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales.

ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES are likely to continue causing MINOR FLOODING of coastal low lying areas between Maroochydore and Ballina, particularly during this morning’s high tide. DAMAGING SURF leading to significant beach erosion remains likely for the open beaches between Noosa and Ballina, and further south over the New South Wales coast. Separate Coastal Hazard and Hazardous Surf warnings are current for southeast Queensland and New South Wales coasts.

Gales with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 120 kilometres per hour may continue to occur near Bribie Island and northern Moreton Bay, including Redcliffe for the next few hours before Alfred moves across the mainland coast and weakens.

Although a weakened Alfred will continue to move inland during today, there is a chance that DAMAGING WIND GUSTS may occur over elevated terrain. A separate Severe Weather Warning is current for this.

People between Noosa and Brisbane, including Sunshine Coast should remain inside until conditions have eased and listen to the next advice.
