Somerset Regional Council with the help of police have moved on illegal campers from Twin Bridges Reserve at Fernvale.

There were at least 15 to 20 people who were living alongside the Mid-Brisbane River for several months.

It followed complaints by nearby residents about the rubbish and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Mayor Jason Wendt said council had been monitoring the situation and brought in police and the Department of Housing to help relocate the illegal campers.

“We also engaged with the campers where possible to find alternatives to sleeping in public reserves and parks,” Cr Wendt said.

“This is a rest stop, not a campground, and we want to see people using it for its intended purpose.

“The Fernvale community has grown tired of watching a treasured public space being tarnished by illegal camping and dumping.

“We recognise some people have found themselves sleeping rough, but they should not be resorting to camping in parks and reserves.

“The Department of Housing continues to work with people illegally camping at Twin Bridges to find alternative lodgings, and has relocated 13 people who have positively engaged with the Critical Response Team.”

QPS have advised council they would hold drop in calls to service Twin Bridges and Geoff Fisher Bridge rest stops to ensure these spaces remain fit for purpose.

Somerset Regional Council, QPS and the Department of Housing will continue monitoring for illegal camping and anti-social behaviour at Twin Bridges and other public reserves.
