Ipswich State High School will be hoping to clinch a Grand Final win for the 2022 Langer Cup on Wednesday afternoon.
The local team (pictured above) will take on Palm Beach for the finals at Manly West.
Head Coach Josh Bretherton says the Ipswich boy’s team is confident ahead of the match after an undefeated season.
“They’ve done an outstanding job against, you know, all the best schools in the state and proving themselves time and time again,” he says.
“Obviously that doesn’t guarantee them anything because grand finals are unique things but they should have some confidence in their ability as they’ve shown some outstanding performances,” Mr Bretherton says.
The Ipswich High Sports Coach says that the school is lucky to have such talented players.
“Each year we always have elite players that are able to match it with other elite schools in the best competition in the state,”he says.
Mr Bretherton says that the school community will be cheering them on Wednesday despite playing over at Wynnum Manly.
“The game will be live streamed so it will be able to be watched online,” he says.
The Langer cup has been a breeding ground for a lot of the best Rugby League talent in the NRL for decades. Recent notable players to come out of the competition include Tommy Dearden, David Faifita, Payne Hass and Ipswich’s very own Ronaldo Mulitao and Philp Sami (Both ex-Ipswich SHS students).
Some of the top schools in this competition have been competing at this level for over 3 decades. Ipswich SHS whose program still isn’t 10 years old has made their first Langer cup grand final on the back of an undefeated season (an extraordinarily rare feat at this level) and is currently the No.1 ranked team in the State.
