Logan City Council has granted the Clutha Creek Quarry at Tamborine a 10-year extension, to operate until 2041.
The quarry has been mining sand for building materials since 1983, and has become a major provider of concrete and asphalt in the South East.
The 98 hectare quarry is in a state government Key Resource Area, which protects the sand...so it's fully mined with the land not used for other purposes.
According to the Courier Mail...based on current drilling operations, it expected to yield a further 12 to 15 million tonnes of sand, which could take between 60 to 75 years.
