Hoaxers have used a Queensland Police Service phone number to commit a Tax Office impersonation scam.
The criminals have committed a practice known as caller ID spoofing where they manipulate the telephone network to show the incoming call is from a different number.
In this case it was a QPS number.
The scammer posing as a Police officer tells the victim they have an outstanding fine or fee with the ATO.
They have then threatened the unsuspecting person with arrest or legal action before demanding a form of payment.
