Police are hunting for the "callous" driver of a ute accused of smashing into a motorcyclist and leaving the rider seriously hurt on the road in Toowoomba.

Acting Inspector Greg Wheeler says the rider and ute collided on Bridge Street, near the Gowrie Road Hotel, at 6.45pm last night.

Both vehicles were heading towards each other when the ute tried to turn right, before hitting motorcyclist who then smashed windscreen, he says.

The driver continued driving, despite significant damage to the vehicle. They then ditched the vehicle and took off on foot.

"Very callous to leave someone on the roadway with significant injuries."

Investigations are being made into the registration of the ute.

"Anyone who did see a middle aged man on nearby West Street flagging down motorists, around of the time of this incident.

"If anyone gave this person a lift, could they contact police."

The rider is in the Princess Alexandra Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
