Ipswich Councillors say they can’t understand why the State Government is setting up a kangaroo court at the suggestion of the Corruption watchdog.
It follows comments made by lawyer Tony Morris QC on the ABC that a decision by the Local Government minister to use laws to sack council was the worst abuse of political power since the Joh Bjelke-Petersen era.
Acting mayor Wayne Wendt (pictured above) says council has always sought a fair hearing.
"This council has always been very professional or respectful of the processes made a couple of months ago.
Therefore, it was a surprise to us the way the Minister has reacted - particularly with his recent action.
In regard to legislation as Tony Morris said this is totally unprecented and to be honest we are quite astounded where this might lead.
