A prisoner en route to hospital on the NSW south coast has died after allegedly grabbing an officer's gun and firing multiple shots before turning the weapon on himself.
The 37-year-old man was being medically transferred to a hospital in Wollongong when the incident occurred.
The inmate allegedly took the firearm from a nearby officer before running down a Wollongong street and firing it a number of times.
The man then used the gun on himself.
Corrective Services NSW is investigating the incident, a spokeswoman said.
"The 37-year-old man suffered serious self-inflicted injuries during an escort to a medical facility at approximately midday today and died a short time later."
"All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest."
